Buckfastleigh’s story goes back to medieval times, with the town’s name likely meaning “clearing near Buckfast Abbey.” The abbey itself, founded in the 11th century, has been at the heart of the area’s history. Though the original buildings fell into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, Buckfast Abbey was beautifully rebuilt by a group of Benedictine monks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. During the Industrial Revolution, Buckfastleigh grew as a centre of wool and textile production.
