Tucked away on the edge of Dartmoor National Park, Buckfastleigh is a charming Devon town with a rich and fascinating past. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient woodland, it’s a place where history and nature come together, offering visitors a glimpse into centuries of rural life, industry, and faith.
Buckfastleigh’s story goes back to medieval times, with the town’s name likely meaning “clearing near Buckfast Abbey.” The abbey itself, founded in the 11th century, has been at the heart of the area’s history. Though the original buildings fell into ruin after the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII, Buckfast Abbey was beautifully rebuilt by a group of Benedictine monks in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, it remains an active monastery and a popular spot for visitors, known for its peaceful grounds, impressive architecture, and famous honey and tonic wine.
During the Industrial Revolution, Buckfastleigh grew as a centre of wool and textile production. The town’s mills once hummed with activity, driving much of the local economy and shaping its community. While the textile industry has long since faded, you can still see reminders of this industrial past in the old mill buildings and along the River Dart, which powered much of the machinery.
One of Buckfastleigh’s quirkiest claims to fame is its connection to the 19th-century figure Richard Cabell, a local squire whose tomb in nearby Holy Trinity Church is said to have inspired the legend behind Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles. The ruined church, perched on a hill overlooking the town, adds a touch of gothic atmosphere to the landscape.
Today, Buckfastleigh is known for its welcoming community, independent shops, and attractions like the South Devon Railway, a beautifully preserved heritage line that runs steam trains along the scenic Dart Valley.
