History of Ashburton, Devon

Ancient Settlement and Saxon Roots

Ashburton, nestled on the southern edge of Dartmoor, traces its origins back to Saxon times. Its name likely derives from an Old English term  “Æsc-burna”, meaning “stream lined with ash trees.” By the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, it was a well-established manor and one of just four official stannary towns in Devon, granted the right to assay and stamp tin for trade.

Stannary Town & Tin Mining Hub

Between the Middle Ages and the early modern era, Ashburton grew thanks to its key role in Dartmoor’s tin mining. As a stannary town, it had its own court and guildhall, serving as the main hub for local miners. The tin trade brought wealth and growth, making Ashburton one of Devon’s leading inland towns.

Markets, Wool Trade & Industry

Besides tin, Ashburton was also known for its busy markets and wool trade, especially in the 16th and 17th centuries. Merchants and craftsmen built stylish townhouses, many of which still stand along the narrow streets. Fulling mills and dyeing houses by the River Ashburn boosted the town’s industry.

Coaching Town & Turnpike Route

During the 18th and early 19th centuries, Ashburton was an important stop on the Exeter to Plymouth road. Its coaching inns were busy with travelers and mail coaches, and the town grew, mixing Georgian style with its older buildings. When the railway arrived in 1872, Ashburton became an even stronger link between Dartmoor and the rest of Devon.

Victorian Prosperity & Civic Pride

In Victorian times, Ashburton added more schools, chapels, and public buildings to its historic streets. The Ashburton Town Hall, built in 1850, still shows the town’s pride and strong community spirit. Education thrived too, and the town became known for its grammar school.

Cultural Life, Politics & Radical Roots

Ashburton has always had a big impact on culture and politics for its size. It was home to John Dunning, 1st Baron Ashburton, an important 18th-century leader who stood up for civil rights. In the 20th century, artists, musicians, and free thinkers were attracted to its creative spirit and the beauty of Dartmoor.

Today’s Ashburton

Today, Ashburton is a lively town that blends its history with creativity. Its high street is full of independent shops, antique stores, local food producers, and craft galleries. With its medieval, industrial, and cultural past still clear in its buildings and feel, Ashburton attracts visitors looking for history and community. Its closeness to Dartmoor and strong roots as a stannary and market town make it a real highlight of inland Devon.
